Twin Town Agreement

A number of Alberta municipalities are twinned with Japanese counterparts as a part of the Province’s Japan-Alberta Twinning Program.  The program provides the opportunity for residents to explore another culture and build friendships with communities abroad.

Whitecourt joined the Twin Town Program in 1998 and officially recognized its relationship with Yubetsu, Japan.  Over the past several years, both communities have hosted delegations and celebratory events to commemorate the bonds of friendship that have developed and to emphasize their commitment to the program.  Whitecourt’s Friendship Park, located in the downtown core, commemorates this special relationship that will continue to grow and flourish.  2008 marked the 10th anniversary of the official agreement signing.

Regular correspondence and visits between the two communities have offered both enriching and positive opportunities for our youth.  A School Exchange Program was developed several years ago that has provided high school students and interested community residents from both towns travel opportunities that otherwise might not have been possible.

The Town of Whitecourt is proud to be a member of the Japan-Alberta Twinning Program and will continue to nurture the relationship it has with its Twin Town, Yubetsu, Japan.
