Whitecourt completes energy upgrades at JDA Place

The Town of Whitecourt is pleased to announce that it has completed an energy project at JDA Place that will create operational cost savings and efficiencies.
The project, which received $192,140 in funding through the Community Energy Conservation Program and the Government of Alberta-funded Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, involved the replacement of the McLeod Arena roof, and installation of a REALice System. The REALice water treatment system eliminates the need for hot water when building and resurfacing the ice. Through both completed upgrades, it is estimated that a greenhouse gas reduction of 11% will be achieved, which equates to a reduction of 1,818.37 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the lifetime of the components.
“The facility enhancements will greatly impact recreational users and visitors to our community, while at the same time making an impact on our environment,” added Whitecourt Mayor Tom Pickard.
“We know how important arenas are to our communities, and how much energy they can use,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. “Upgrades can carry a high price tag, which is why we’re pleased to help fund this project. The new arena roof and other upgrades will help lower utility costs for Whitecourt while supporting more fun at the rink.”
The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the Community Energy Conservation Program was provided by the Government of Alberta.
