McLeod and Athabasca Rivers Flood Watch for Whitecourt - Update as of 5:30pm June 20, 2023

A Flood Watch remains in effect for the McLeod and Athabasca Rivers at Whitecourt. River levels are anticipated to peak by the morning of June 21, 2023.

Evacuation Orders remain in effect for Westview Mobile Village (Westview Trailer Court) and Sagitawah RV Park. The Evacuation Orders will be reassessed on June 21, 2023 and an update will be issued to the community by 12 noon on June 21.

  • An Evacuation Reception Centre has been established for Westview Mobile Village residents at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre (58 Sunset Boulevard). All evacuees must register at the Reception Centre.
  • Those evacuated from Sagitawah RV Park are to register with the Sagitawah RV Park at 780-778-3734.

The RCMP will be providing property patrols of the evacuated sites.

A High Water Level Alert was issued by the Town of Whitecourt which can be viewed on the Alberta Emergency Alert website. People are reminded to exercise extreme caution around the rivers. The following facilities and amenities are closed until further notice:

  • Festival Park and the surrounding trail system in and out of the Park as well as the Off-Leash Dog Park;
  • Riverside Trail;
  • Whitecourt Golf & Country Club;
  • Riverboat Park.

Flooding has occurred at the north end of 47 Street/Millar Road, and the road is closed temporarily at Flats Road. Barricades have been erected, and members of the public are asked to obey all posted signage.

Due to flooding, Highway 32 near Township Road 583B/Groat Creek staging area is reduced to single lane, alternating traffic. Temporary traffic lights with speed reduced to 50km/h is in place. For updates visit 511 Alberta.

The Town of Whitecourt will continue to monitor water levels and river forecasts provided by the Government of Alberta, and will inform the community as updates become available. Updates will be provided at www.whitecourt.ca and on Whitecourt’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TownofWhitecourt.
